retro sewing

I have finally gotten around to subscribing to SewRetro, a mailing list for sewers of vintage style clothing from the 1930’s through the 1960’s. I’ve been a subscriber of h-costume for years and years to support my interests in Elizabethan through Victorian costuming, but have recently branched out into the 1940’s. I bought a ton of patterns on ebay, and currently have three dresses under way — Vintage Vogue 1943 dress which I’m making in a fabulous cherry print rayon, Vintage Vogue 1937 dress, which is pretty much finished (except for the hem) but doesn’t look too hot on me (I’m way too curvy for 1930’s styles, I think), and a vintage pattern I found on ebay. Now I just have to find some really good shoes to go with these dresses…

COMMENTARY

True Love
It’s true, I’m in love. Peter Fox shoes are the most fabulous thing I have ever seen in my whole life. Why, God, WHY are they so expensive? It’s just WRONG! The world is an imperfect place! There is no justice! I’m obviously going to have to do some whining come Christmas…

This is only my most ideal shoe in the whole world. Sob.

COMMENTARY

Costume College

You know you’re way too into your hobby when you go to college for it. Costume College is just about the coolest thing around for a sewing geek like me. Not only do they have lecture-type classes (eg overview of Regency dress), but also day-long hands-on workshops where you’ll make a corset (or some other semi-difficult item) with a teacher who knows what they’re talking about. This year I’m hoping to take period hair & makeup, Victorian mourning, Dickens caroling bonnet (hands-on workshop), and who knows what else! There’s also costume exhibits and a marketplace full of dealers selling everything from books to patterns to boning to hats to…

Costume College 2002 is July 19-21 in Van Nuys, Calif.
