Just in Time for Gatsby

Sarah at Mode Historique found this wonderful overview of vintage makeup styles of the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 50s from Besame Cosmetics. You may need to register to see it.

Speaking of which, has anyone tried their lipsticks? It looks like the reds are a lot brighter than their color swatches (compare the color swatches to their models (again, you may have to register) — I’m a cranberry girl rather than an orange-red girl — but I’m tempted to try their Merlot shade. Anyways!

I Swear I Didn’t

I did NOT just drop a large amount of money on some really cute vintage-style dresses (and a smart flower pin) at Trashy Diva. I swear I didn’t. It would also be wrong of me to direct your attention to Manifesto Clothing’s new styles, and also to point out that they do custom work (nor should I tell you that they recently custom made me – oh the joy of not doing it myself! – a very smart 1940s style dress). Nope. I’m keeping my mouth (and wallet) shut. You can’t prove anything.

Normally I Don’t Go in for This Kind of Thing

But hey, why not! The FIDM online shop is selling advance copies of the Dressing a Galaxy: The Costumes of Star Wars book. It will only be available via FIDM from 9/12-24 (after which you can buy it elsewhere). I personally will be ordering the normal edition, but if you’ve got some money to burn and you want a “Wookiee belt-buckle cast replica” and “Fabric swatches cut from the same bolts as the actual costume material that was used for Darth Vader’s cape” then you should think about ponying up $295 for the limited edition. More info on the exhibition (opens 9/12) will be coming soon on the exhibition website.

Parisian Fabric

Okay, so I’m slow about posting my pictures from my trip, but I thought I’d better photograph my fabric before I put it away into the stash! This is the pseudo-18th c. indienne cotton print that I picked up in Paris, which shall become a 1780s robe a l’anglaise with en fourreau back — one of these days.

Chicaaaaago

I’ll be in Chicago this weekend for a library conference. Does anyone know if there is any particularly good fabric shopping for the costumer with little spare time? Isn’t Vogue Fabrics (or something like that) supposed to be good?
