Costume in Cinema

New costume movie reviews! The new ITV (UK TV) Northanger Abbey (which will be broadcast this fall on Masterpiece Theatre; the forthcoming Persuasion and Mansfield Park have also been reviewed, as I mentioned in a previous post) on the Regency page, Miss Potter on the Edwardian page, Evening and Wallis & Edward on the 20th century page.

Also, Trystan gave me the great idea to add links to Amazon for all the movies I review (and hopefully earn a few pennies towards the hosting of this site via Amazon Associates). So, should you want to support this site, and see a movie you’d like to buy on my review pages, I’d appreciate your click through to Amazon from the link next to the review. Thank-ee kindly!

Trawling the Web

While we wait with bated breath to see the outcome of all TOBG(YN) [The Other Boleyn Girl] costume brouhaha, I found this LA Times article that talks about the costumes in TOBG(YN) and The Tudors (Showtime), and interviews Sandy Powell (costume designer). I like how the author actually acts like Joan Bergin (costume designer for The Tudors) wasn’t on crack.

Also, Trystan found these podcasts from Colonial Williamsburg — near the bottom you’ll find, “Clothing Speaks,” with Linda Baumgarten (textiles and costumes curator, and author of, “What Clothes Reveal”). Haven’t listened to it yet, but I definitely will!

New Costume Movie Reviews

I have been WOEFULLY bad about keeping up with my costume movie watching, and actually pretty bad about watching any costume movies! I don’t know what happened — I got into this “tv/movie watching is wasted time!” mode. But I have gotten slightly better, and here’s the result – new reviews! The ITV Mansfield Park and Persuasion (just out in the UK a few months ago) on the Regency page; The Ruby in the Smoke: The Sally Lockhart Mysteries and The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton (both recent BBC productions) on the Victorian page; and Love in a Cold Climate and The Painted Veil on the 20th Century page. And the Upcoming Movies page is updated! Phew!

Jane Austen Mania!

Get ready – it’s almost time for Jane Austen mania! Becoming Jane is playing now in the UK, will hit the US in August. The website is up, and you can watch the trailer and see pics of the costumes in the gallery.

ITV (UK tv) will be broadcasting a “Jane Austen season” (this spring in the UK, this winter in the US), which includes new versions of Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion (they will be rebroadcasting the Kate Beckinsale version of Emma). Their site has the MP trailer, plus galleries for all three new films. Check out the fabulous stripey ensemble on Maria? in the MP gallery (middle row, middle pic; bottom row, right pic).

If you’re interested on keeping up to date on this and other things Austen, I highly recommend AustenBlog.
