I may be too lazy to sew, but feeling lazy is perfect for watching costume movies! New reviews of He Knew He Was Right (Victorian page), Maurice (Edwardian page), and Island at War (20th c. page) have been posted. Oh, and “flim” = Kendraspeak for film. Makes it very hard to dial 777-FILM, I tell ya.
A Plethora of Reviews
Just added reviews of: Snow White: A Tale of Terror (Medieval/Tudor/Elizabethan page); the 1981 BBC Sense & Sensibility (Regency page [got the set for Christmas, look for more reviews soon!]); The Aviator, and Bertie and Elizabeth (20th c. page).
Life! Hectic!
Busy busy! Aside from getting ready for Christmas and then surviving the holiday itself, I’ve been to see The Aviator (GORgeous) and A Series of Unfortunate Events (Meryl Streep’s 1890s gown was beautiful, Violet wears a very gothy 1820s-esque dress for most of the film) — reviews soon. Dying to get to A Very Long Engagement, and not-so-dying-but-it’s-playing-up-the-street to see Phantom of the Opera.
I also went to the Gaskell Ball (a very few photos here).
Got some great costume-related gifts for Christmas, including Costume Close-Up (I’d missed buying that one somehow), three of the Textiles for… Clothing books (yay for Amazon wishlists!), and I Capture the Castle and the Jane Austen collection (all the BBC 1970s-80s adaptations) on DVD. Whew!
I hope everyone had a nice holiday (for those that celebrate) or a nice day at the movies (for those who don’t)!
Costume in Cinema
Okee dokee! Just added a review of Iron Jawed Angels to my 20th c. costume movies page.
I was doing some web surfing and came across some great photos of The Aviator (which I am DYING to see), plus The Phantom of the Opera (which I’m more inclined to see, given how gorgeous it’s looking — but I still want a mute button).
Finally, it’s not really not so much a review as a report: rented and tried to watch Russian Ark. Made it through the first 20 min., got bored enough to watch the rest on fast forward. As costumes go, you basically get a lot of 1830s, a little bit of mid-18th c., and a little bit of 1900’s pre-Revolution. I admit that I’m the type who needs at least a little bit of plot to get me through, and there was really none — plus even the costumes weren’t exciting enough to hold my interest.
New Movie Reviews/Random Chit Chat
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I got absolutely no costume sewing done, although I did work on an appliqued skirt to wear to a dinner party Friday night — which I am proud to say I sewed myself into (no time to put in a zipper)! Photos soon.
I did get to see Finding Neverland, so I’ve added a review to my Edwardian costume movies page, plus I’ve added a review of Swing Kids to the 20th c. costume movies page (thanks to those who’ve poked me to review it).
Random thoughts: how many of you get mental costuming fever like I do? I’ll see a movie, pick up a pattern, or just start thinking, and suddenly I HAVE to have something. Late last week, it was a late 1900s suit; then I saw Finding Neverland and really wanted an Edwardian lingerie blouse; then I found a cheap copy of the Past Patterns 1920s step-in combinations and suddenly was lusting for 1920s undies. I’m terrible — I get this costume lust and suddenly am off buying patterns, looking at online fabric shops, scouring ebay… I swear, if it weren’t for online shopping, I’d be a lot richer! It’s hard, because I’m terribly excited about my current and sensibly planned future projects, but then I get totally (mentally) sidetracked into something totally different. Is there a cure? Do I even want one?
