Do you love Mad Men as much as I do? If so, it’s probably because not only is a great story, but also the amazing attention to period detail. And I am increasingly learning to LOVE the early 1960s, so yeah — if I could have Joan Holloway’s hair & wardrobe, I’d be pretty happy.

The Jalou Gallery just released a complete online archive of L’Officiel de Mode, one of the oldest French fashion magazines. Dates are from 1920-2008. A useful resource for 20th century costume research!
The Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY) is presenting an interesting-sounding exhibition called, “Marie Antoinette: Styling the 18th-Century Superstar”. It features 20th and 21st-century fashion design inspired by the 18th-century fashion aesthetic of Marie Antoinette. You can see some photos on their website.
Who doesn’t love the gorgeous Art Deco fashion illustrations of George Barbier? There is an exhibition going on now at the Museo Fortuny in Venice (through Jan. 5, 2009) on his work. Check out information about the exhibit and some gorgeous reproductions of his work. It looks like there is a catalog, available in Italian and English, although I can only find the Italian version online.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is currently hosting an exhibition on designer Paul Poiret (he of the fabulous Orientalist designs of the 1910s). Oh to get to NYC! In the meantime, check out the exhibition details, some photos of the exhibition on Flickr, and what appears to be a Poiret-inspired photo shoot in the May 2007 issue of Vogue. I had a chance to flip through the hefty exhibition catalog at the Museum of Costume in Bath and can report that it looks really nicely done, and shall be at the top of my Christmas list this year. If anyone makes it, take lots of pictures!
