Daniel Deronda

Why I love the BBC: Daniel Deronda! Bee-yoo-tiful costumes (set in 1874). Some really great clothes, especially Gwendolen’s purple & white striped bodice, which had a really interesting cut in back — the center back piece was cut on the straight (stripes going up and down), while the side backs were cut on an angle, so that the stripes angled down and in.

Gaskell Ball

Photos from the Gaskell ball on 6/7/03, which leads me to….

What HAPPENED to all of the period costumes at Gaskells????

Okay, granted I’ve only been to two Gaskells in the last six years, but there were literally only about 6 women wearing even ATTEMPTS at period costume at the entire ball!!!! Most were wearing some version of the modern corset/ballgown skirt combo (which I think is very attractive and nice) but isn’t it supposed to be a VICTORIAN ball? I am glad that new people are getting into period dancing, and I’m all for wearing things that you like or that are different from what everyone else is wearing — but wearing period costume appears to be the wacky, gee-aren’t-i-alternative thing to do these days! Heather and I had to resort to playing spot-the-period costume finally! I even found myself thinking, “Does someone need to offer some sort of crash course on Victorian costuming or something?”
