Custom 18th Century Wigs
I am pleased to offer, on commission, custom 18th century styled wigs based on one of the following styles. I plan to soon offer earlier (1750s-60s) styles, as well as men’s styles.
While my own focus is on historically accurate looks, I am happy to make fantasy-inspired 18th century style wigs, and/or work in crazy colors (blue, pink, etc.)!
1770s Pouf
The high, ship-in-the-hair style was called the “pouf.” It was often styled into allegories of current events, such as à l’inoculation (vaccine), ballon (Montgolfier balloon experiments); or concepts, such as à la Zodiaque, à la frivolité, des migraines, etc. There are numerous variations: some are only a few inches tall, others tower 1-2 times the size of the wearer’s head. Usually they feature some combination of structured side curls. In back, they usually have a ponytail or braid worn looped up.
1780s Hedgehog
The “hérisson” or “hedgehog” was a mass of curls, with emphasis on width rather than height. It was considered a more “natural” style in line with ideas of the Enlightenment and Rousseau. Some are more curly and others are more frizzy. In back, they usually feature a ponytail or braid (worn down, or looped up).

Pricing
Pricing is dependent on the specific details of your commission. General estimates are about $250 for a 1770s pouf, and $175 for a 1780s hedgehog. This price estimate includes:
- styled synthetic hair wig
- combs to attach the wig to your own hair
- styrofoam head (to help the wig keep it style when shipped/stored)
- wearing/upkeep/styling instructions
Shipping charges to deliver the wig to you are also additional. Any decoration (jewels, ribbons, etc.), if desired, is additional.
I will provide a detailed estimate once we have discussed your needs and preferences.

- Do you want a historically accurate look? If so, are you going for the look of a general era/decade, or are you trying to achieve a specific year? OR do you want a fantasy look?
- Do you know the hair color number desired? If so, please tell me what it is.
- Do you have a specific design in mind for the hairstyle? Feel free to send me reference images. Note that I can also provide you with reference/inspirational images, if you need help deciding on the details of your design.
- Do you want additional decorations on the wig?
- Do you have a deadline by which you need to receive the wig?
Restyling Services
Styled wigs will only last for a certain amount of time. The more careful you are in storing, wearing, and transporting your wig, the longer it will last. I will provide you with wearing/upkeep/styling instructions, but you may at some point prefer to have your wig entirely restyled. If you purchased a custom styled wig from me, I will be happy to restyle it for you for a fee: $100 for a 1770s pouf, and $50 for a 1780s hedgehog. This offer/service is only available to customers who have purchased a custom styled wig from me.
