Awards Time!

Oscar nominations are out — costume design:

  • Australia
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • The Duchess
  • Milk
  • Revolutionary Road

I still need to see 3 of the 5, so I’m not sure yet who I’m rooting for! Obviously The Duchess was amazing, but it’s an obvious choice…

The Costume Designers Guild award nominations are also out. Period/fantasy TV series:

  • Mad Men (yes! yes!)
  • Pushing Daisies
  • The Tudors (dear god NO)

TV miniseries or movie:

  • Bernard & Doris
  • Coco Chanel
  • Cranford
  • John Adams
  • Sense & Sensibility

Period film:

  • Changeling
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • The Duchess
  • Milk
  • Revolutionary Road

(interesting that it’s almost, but not quite, identical to the Oscar noms).

Fantasy film:

  • Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
  • The Dark Knight
  • The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Have you seen Australia yet The costumes are great maybe as good as the duchess. I am rooting for the duchess and will be as long as The curse of benjamin button does not win. Seriously the costumes are a bore!

What I meant to say was I will be happy as long BB does not win.

“dear god NO” about the Tudors is right! I have to admit that since I’ve gotten more relaxed about period accuracey in film/tv costuming (it’s generally innaccurate on purpose) I actually enjoyed *most* of the costumes in The Tudors, but more on a fantasy level.

It would be *SO* awesome if Mad Men won, OMG!!!!!

I really need to get Mad Men on DVD… esp. as my FIL (who I’ve never met and by all accounts is Not A Nice Person) was an advertising exec in NY at that exact period. I’ve caught a couple of episodes but they’re about to show the second season here so must get DVD!

Kate: it is absolutely one of my favorite shows. Great story and SUCH amazing period detail!

Anon – I really want to see Australia, if for no other reason than the costumes! And Revolutionary Road. Seen Milk – eh, sure, the costumes were nice but I get less excited about a film where the costumes were probably bought rather than made. And BB — I just have no desire to see it! I love Cate Blanchett, but… ugh.

I’m okay with historical costumes in TV/movie productions being theatrical and all that, but The Tudors takes it WAY too far. Especially that white monstrosity and the long hair on every character and UGH. Mad Men should definitely win.

BB was a good film, but I don’t think it was particularly outstanding from a costuming standpoint (I also think Milk was a more important film – I’ll be upset if BB wins Best Picture over Milk or Frost/Nixon).

I think Duchess is a shoe-in for best costumes. Mad Men should definitely win for TV costumes. That whole series is a study in period accuracy (and not just costumes). The Tudors is pretty (mmm, JRM…), but the costumes make me cringe.
