Oscar Fashion Roundup: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Wow, were you as under-inspired by last night’s Oscar fashions as I was? The only people I could get excited about were Cate Blanchett (I love that she never plays it safe; of course, she could look great in a paper bag), Helen Mirren (love the heavy satin, color, sweep of the skirt, diamond “shrug” accent, elbow-length sleeves), and Marion Cotillard (when I first saw it, I didn’t like it, but it quickly grew on me after the snooze fest of all the rest of the gowns). I might have been able to get excited about Hilary Swank if she had opted for a color other than black (zzzzzzz).

Everything else was boring, boring, boring! Nothing to dislike, even! Total snooze-fest.

I’m happy, although not hugely excited, about Alexandra Byrne’s win for The Golden Age (could have been equally excited about Sweeney Todd or Atonement – just not super excited about any of the options this year). Hopefully next year will be far more exciting!

  1. See, I thought that Cate did pregnant better last time–Jessica Alba won the belly prize, I think. (And knock me over with a feather to say it). Cate’s frock was cut too short! Kill the stylist! Liked Hilary, but yes, agreed on the black. Really like Marion C’s gown–I just knew those scales were going to shimmer like wild on stage. Bored to tears by Diablo Cody’s “I am so bohemian,” look–especially because she kept clutching at the skirt. Girl, if you can’t handle the the dress, don’t wear one that’s sliced puka-high! Miley Cyrus looked too old, What was up with DDL’s wife Rebecca Miller? Nicole Kidman–yawn; Cameron Diaz, great dress,
blah color; loved sparkly Renee Zellweger. The tragedy is that beyond those few, I can’t remember anything else because the “meh” was so overwhelming…

  2. Jen: sorry, that dress left me bored too! Maybe if it had been a more interesting color?

Athene: yes, I noticed Diablo clutching at her dress and felt vaguely uncomfortable for her. Miley Cyrus irritates me. DDL’s wife was OUTSTANDING – I forgot about her! She wins the prize for most crap on a dress. Nicole – yes, yawn; Cameron – zzzz; Renee – standard thing she always wears!

  3. Yes!!!! Kendra I completely agree with you about the snooziness of the dresses….the whole show, in fact, I thought seemed a little bit forced. Why were there 3 songs from Enchanted for example? And the Best Picture award came really quickly as if they were rushing it. But I thought the biggest fashion problem was that alot of the dresses were throwbacks to the 80s or early 90s. Many of them looked uninspired, not daring enough at all for the Academy Awards. And what was up with all the Mirabou? Anyhoo….I agree with all your top picks, and I really liked Tilda Swinton’s weird dress too. Here’s hoping next year’s is back to normal…

  4. What drove me nuts, besides the totally uninspired feeling of the whole event, was that so many of the dresses didn’t seem to fit! What, did they decide to do the show so late that nobody could get their dresses altered? Even Nicole Kidman, who usually looks so fabulous, had these nasty gappy wings of fabric between her breasts and her pits. I liked her necklace, but the dress was bad. I liked Hillary, Katherine Heigl, Renee Zelwegger, Anne Hathaway, and the french fish scale number. Other than that? Snoooorrrre!

  5. Wow, another black/red one shoulder dress, with a train. Do they call each other before?
Love Helen Mirren. I want to be like her when I grow up.
At our house, the big excitement was the Best Song win for “Once,” and the Best Animated Film to the greatest food movie ever, “Ratatoullie.”
