European Photo-pa-looza!

First, an update on the end of my trip! We spent the weekend with Bess and Edmund in Suffolk, going to nearby Melford Hall in bustle era costume. It was great fun — we had a picnic, toured the house, and then took lots of photos in the gardens (sadly, no photos inside). Made good friends with a Texan tour group, even the guy who marched up to me and said, “You’re from California, aren’t you?” Apparently I’m going to be in his Christmas card this year.

So here are my photos!

Miscellaneous costume-related photos (museum trawls, mostly)

Bustles at Melford Hall

Okay, now I really need to start on Costume College sewing!

  1. Oh wow! Those are all so beautiful! I especially like some of the bustle pictures. The back view of you stepping out of that big arched doorway with the gardens in front of you literally took my breath away!

  2. Oooohhh!!! Edmund and I are on the the famous Demode Couture front page!!!!

    Squeeeee!!!!!

Its was a lot of fun wasn’t it???? Thankyou for coming to stay! It was lovely.

  3. I especially liked the photo from the Versailles non-invasion of the group of little girls coming up to you. They must have thought they had stumbled across real live princesses!

  4. I love the bustle pics – very entertaining, and I don’t remember seeing the really cute hat before. How did you get your hair like that – do you have an added piece?

  5. Hannah – yes, pretty much!

Kate – yes, it’s an added piece – about two long braiding hanks braided into one big braid, that I pinned into a loop with bobby pins and covered with two hairnets (each covers half of the braid loop – you can see the overlap but barely; I pulled the excess net to the inside of the braid loop and whip stitched it to keep it secure).

  6. Wow, it looks like you all had SO much fun! Too bad about not getting in to Versailles, but it certainly looks like you made the best of it! Wish I could have been there! 🙂

  7. Wow, really nice photos. The photo of Bess and you in the garden “twirling” is my favourite! Becca

  8. Oh, y’all looked like you had so much fun! Can I just say that Bess & Edmund are the kay-OOT-est couple? LOL!
