Jane Austen Mania!

Get ready – it’s almost time for Jane Austen mania! Becoming Jane is playing now in the UK, will hit the US in August. The website is up, and you can watch the trailer and see pics of the costumes in the gallery.

ITV (UK tv) will be broadcasting a “Jane Austen season” (this spring in the UK, this winter in the US), which includes new versions of Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion (they will be rebroadcasting the Kate Beckinsale version of Emma). Their site has the MP trailer, plus galleries for all three new films. Check out the fabulous stripey ensemble on Maria? in the MP gallery (middle row, middle pic; bottom row, right pic).

If you’re interested on keeping up to date on this and other things Austen, I highly recommend AustenBlog.

  1. woohoo, Becoming Jane opens on March 29th in Sydney, and I missed preview screenings last weekend. As in I found out about them on Monday. I’m trying to scrabble together a regency outfit to wear to the movie – a Sydney ACG event that I organised but failed to start sewing for in a timely manner. eep

  2. Hi I am from london and thought I would let you know about “Mansfield Park” which was on sunday evening

The costuming was very strange not being able to put an exact date as to when it was set as the waistlines were all over the place and then at the end the did “A new dance” called “The Waltz” which sets it about 1815

I saw alot of dresses from the “Sense and Sensiblity” film with Kate Winslet

I cant wait for “Northanger Abbey” this sunday

  3. Thanks to the person who wrote the comment above; that explains why I was suffering from costume deja vu.
I found Mansfield Park disappointing, as “Fanny” (can’t remember the actress’ name, sorry) never put her hair up or wore a hat, while everyone around her did. Austenblog also reports that Austen’s prose was radically altered, certain parts of the plot were cropped, and locations were missing. I hope they don’t kill off Persuasion as badly as this.

  4. Yeah, I’m a little weirded out by the pics of Billie Piper in her long-waisted dresses and hair down! I’ll totally watch this, but based on the reviews on AustenBlog I’ll be ready to dislike it. It sounds like they changed weird plot points, too! What’s up with that?
